June Meeting on the 20th—O’Donoghue and McMenamin Invited to Attend

We’ve invited Tom O’Donoghue, the winner of the Republican primary in the 8th Congressional District on Tuesday and now the challenger to Rep. Jim Moran, as well Mike McMenamin, the Republican running for Arlington County Board, to attend our meeting to tell us about their respective campaigns and how we can help.  We will also discuss the latest developments in the Commonwealth Coalition’s efforts to defeat the so-called marriage amendment and other club news.  As usual, you can join us at the Boulevard Woodgrill, 2901 Wilson Blvd. in Arlington, just one block from the Clarendon Metro stop.  You can join us for drinks at 6:30 and the meeting will begin at 7:00.

May Meeting – A Pitch for Help in the Trenches

We apologize to members who attended the May meeting, only to discover that our regular venue downstairs at the Boulevard Woodgrill had been double booked, and we were forced to enjoy the beautiful spring evening outside.  Mark Ellmore, a candidate in the Republican primary to challenge Representative Jim Moran, spoke about his campaign and asked for our support, as did Tom O’Donoghue the month before.  Also attending was Craig Romm, a representative from the Alexandria Young Republicans who discussed efforts to help U.S. Senator Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island, an inclusive Republican leader, in his battle for re-election.  And finally, plans for the coming amendment battle at the polls were discussed.

Those efforts are being headed by the Commonwealth Coalition with the goal of educating voters on the impact the amendment would have on the residents of Virginia.  To do that, the Coalition needs volunteers, votes, and money.  Anyone interested in working on this bi-partisan, statewide effort by staffing targeted precincts on Election Day, working phone banks, doing lit drops, or just writing a check, can contact the Coalition at: The Commonwealth Coalition, 421 E. Franklin Street, Suite 310, Richmond, VA  23219

The phone number is 804-643-2050, and they can be e-mailed at: volunteer@voteNOva.org.  General information on the group’s objectives and the means of getting there is available at www.voteNOva.org.  One startling fact is that by taking just 30 seconds to discuss this issue with friends and colleagues, two out of every three minds can be changed.  When you contact the Commonwealth Coalition, please be sure to tell them that you’re a Log Cabin supporter and you want your Republican voice to be heard.

Gay Pride Day – Log Cabin Was Showing Its Colors

We’d like to thank everyone who came by the Log Cabin table in the Virginia Coalition’s tent on Pride Day.  It would be nice to say that everyone welcomed our presence, but the opportunity to explain why we are Republicans and what we hope to accomplish by our struggle to bring the Party back to its roots made the occasional rude comment palatable.  One seemingly intelligent person actually asked what the Log Cabin Republican Club of Virginia’s official position is on the proposed “marriage amendment” to Virginia’s constitution.  At first, it seemed like a ludicrous question, but the seriousness of the questioner reveals how much work we have to do.  The Club’s official position is that we oppose writing discrimination into Virginia’s Bill of Rights; we are in favor of equality of rights for all citizens.   It’s painfully obvious that we, as a Club, have to educate the gay and lesbian communities about the Republican Party, and the Republican Party about the gay and lesbian communities.  With your help, we will do just that.

The Votes Are In – Tom O’Donoghue Will Take on Jim Moran in November

The Log Cabin Republican Club of Virginia would like to congratulate Tom O’Donoghue on his victory in Tuesday’s primary and winning the right to challenge Rep. Jim Moran in November.  Tom took time out of his busy schedule leading up to Tuesday’s election to speak to the Club and outline his stands on important issues facing Virginia and the country.  We encourage any members who volunteer to help Tom in his campaign to let him and his campaign managers know that you are loyal, Log Cabin Republicans.  Tom’s campaign can be reached at:  Tom O’Donoghue for Congress, Park Fairfax Station – Box 16414, Alexandria, VA  22302, or at www.TOMODONOGHUE.COM, or at 703-581-8612.

Summer Picnic – Mark Your Calendar for August 13

This year’s annual summer picnic, held on Sunday, August 13, in lieu of the regular monthly meeting, will be hosted by Daniel Gri and James Abbott.  Daniel and James have graciously offered their beautiful home to the Club, and will be hosting the picnic and pool party!  Parking, food, drink, and escape from the elements, if necessary, will all be available for a suggested contribution of $15.00.  Their home is at 10329 Hickory Forest Dr. in Oakton, and the time will be from 1 until 5 pm.  We urge all members to invite their family and friends to this great annual event as part of our statewide effort to put a human face on the proposed marriage amendment and the lives such discrimination would affect.  For more details, visit our website at www.VirginiaLogCabin.org.

Noted author Chandler Burr has written a new white paper for the Liberty Education Fourm.  Burr's white paper clearly demonstrates that we already know the answer to this question--people don't choose their sexual orientation.  This has important political implications and it's a powerfull tool for achieving equality.

Quotable Quotes

Barry Goldwater, speaking in 1981: "I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that, if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in A, B, C, or D . . . .I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate."
