December Holiday Party – Happy Holidays to All!

By the time you receive this issue, our annual holiday party will have passed and the holidays will be upon us.  We want to thank our gracious hosts this year, Daniel Gri and James Abbot, for opening up their beautiful home and providing everyone with such a great array of food and drink.  We also want to thank those members who contributed food and drink as well.  Finally, we want to extend our holiday greetings to everyone along with our best wishes for a happy and prosperous New Year.

November Meeting – A Postmortem on the Direction of the Republican Party

Once again Amy Walter from The Cook Report gave the club an excellent postmortem on the generally disastrous election for Republicans.  She explained that the recent election was one of the relatively rare elections where national issues like the Iraq war really drove the debate, rather than the usual “all politics is local” issues.  She pointed out the irony that the Democratic shift actually resulted in the loss of a number of socially moderate Republicans in the Northeast and elsewhere, probably strengthening the control of the more socially conservative wing over the Party.  In the Rocky Mountain region and the Southern border states of Virginia, Missouri, and Kentucky, Democratic upsets in several key House and Senate races show the waning strength of the GOP outside the Deep South.
How long this new Democratic control will last will depend on how the Iraq war and related issues play out over the next two years, as well as whether or not the Republican Party can shed its negative image of a party controlled by religious extremists rather than a big tent party united by economic issues.  What direction the Party will take in the last two years of the Bush administration will help decide the Party’s fortunes in ’08.

January Meeting – A New Venue, A New Day, A New Format

Because of continuing scheduling problems with the Boulevard Woodgrill restaurant, our meeting place for the past several years, our Club will begin meeting at both a new location and on a new day beginning with the January meeting.  Our new location will be the Rhodeside Grill at 1836 Wilson Blvd. in Arlington.  Most of you will remember that this was our meeting location before we moved to the Woodgrill a few years ago.

Our new meeting day will be the second Tuesday of every month, so our next meeting will be on January 9 at our usual time of 6:30 for refreshments and 7:00 for the meeting.  Members will also be able to order dinner before the meeting begins, allowing those who so choose to eat during the business portion of our meetings, and we will close our meetings with our usual speaker.  This new format will allow people to get home earlier in the evening, and we think that will be an advantage for most attendees.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the Woodgrill and its management and staff for the hospitality and consideration they have extended to us over the years.

The most important order of business at the January 9 meeting will be the election of new officers, and the current board has put together the following slate of candidates for your consideration:

President – Scott McCoy
Vice President – David Lampo
Secretary - open
Treasurer – Steve McLendon
Internal Communications Director – Larry Yontz
External Communications Director-- open
Membership – Rebecca Maestri
Social Director – Daniel Gri
Webmaster – Jean Hacken

None of these offices is set in stone, so if you’re interested in running for any of these positions, have ideas on how to improve the club, have special talents you want to share, or would be available for special volunteer opportunities, please talk with any current board member or email Rebecca Maestri at rlmaestri@aol.com.  We need and want new ideas and new blood to energize and strengthen the Club, and we welcome your involvement.

January 17, 2007 Is Lobby Day in Richmond - Your Chance to Be Heard

The third annual Lobby Day in Richmond will be on Wednesday, January 17, 2007, and this is an opportunity to tell our elected leaders that we are here and that we count!  This annual event, co-sponsored by the Log Cabin Republican Club of Virginia, Equality Virginia, and a host of other political and civic organizations, is a day of out-reach efforts to elected officials in Richmond.  In 2006, over 500 gay and straight citizens from around the commonwealth met to demonstrate our commitment to equal treatment under the law for all.

Experience in public speaking or effective lobbying is not required.  If you can participate in any way, we encourage you to  sign up at www.EqualityVirginia.org.  It is vital that our elected representatives understand that equal treatment of all citizens  is a nonpartisan goal of most Virginians, and that it is very much a Republican principle.    With the entire Virginia legislature up for election in November, we need to show proponents of bigotry that gays and lesbians have rights, and we will fight for what is ours.  It is said that if you want to travel fast, travel alone.  If you want to travel far, travel together.

Together, with friends and allies from all walks of life and from all parts of Virginia, we can show our opponents that our purpose is noble and as old as our democracy.  We cherish the same things as they do: life, liberty, our families, and our country.
For complete information on the schedule of activities, their times and locations, check out our website: www.VirginiaLogCabin.orgWe’ll see you in Richmond on the 17th!

The Only Question That Matters: Do People Choose Their Sexual Orientation?

Noted author Chandler Burr has written a new white paper for the Liberty Education Fourm.  Burr's white paper clearly demonstrates that we already know the answer to this question--people don't choose their sexual orientation.  This has important political implications and it's a powerfull tool for achieving equality.

Quotable Quotes
Richmond Times-Dispatch

Barry Goldwater, speaking in 1981: "I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that, if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in A, B, C, or D . . . .I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate."
