Del. Vince Callahan Wins Award at Annual Equality Virginia Dinner
Equality Virginia’s Fifth Annual Commonwealth Dinner, “On the Road to Equality,” was held on Saturday, April 5, in Richmond and was a terrific event. This black-tie-optional event brought together 1200 people from around the Commonwealth who have been working for fairness and equality for all Virginians to celebrate our victories and plan for the future. As usual, both David Lampo, Log Cabin’s vice president, and the club itself were table hosts. Joining the Log Cabin table were long-time Republican Delegate Vince Callahan from McLean and his wife Yvonne. Callahan was awarded EV’s Equality Public Servant Award at the dinner. In spite of a controversy over his award instigated by some members of Virginia Partisans, the GLBT Democratic group, Callahan received a standing ovation from much of the crowd for his significant contributions to GLBT equality during his service in the House. We thank him for that, and it was delightful to spend the evening with both of them. 2008 Calendar for the Log Cabin Republican Club of Virginia
To give members and supporters more notice of Log Cabin events and meetings, we’ve developed a calendar of events for the entire year. It’s posted at www.VirginiaLogCabin.org, so please check it out for the latest information.
In place of the usual monthly meeting in March, there was instead a brunch on Sunday, March 16, at the home of Carl Jackson (the club’s president) and Si Snow. The brunch drew nearly 40 people who enjoyed the vast amounts of food and drink and political discussion. As we’ve stated before, we believe many of our members prefer more social events to formal business meetings, so we will certainly be doing more of these in the future. Please join us next time if you missed this one. Paid members of the Virginia chapter attended for free, so please join or renew your membership now. Dues are $50 for singles; $80 for couples; $10 for at-large members from outside the northern Virginia region; and for students, half price for whichever category otherwise applies.
We also had an alternative event for our April monthly meeting by meeting instead at Freddie’s Beach Bar in Arlington for Happy Hour. About 25 folks joined us for drinks and dinner afterwards. Again, it was opportunity to get to better know our fellow members and friends. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Visits 2008 Log Cabin Convention; Promises Opposition to State Marriage Amendment California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger told the 300 attendees at the Log Cabin Republican National Convention in San Diego on April 11 that he will oppose the California state marriage amendment being pushed for the November election if it’s successful in making the ballot. Gov. Schwarzenegger had not previously publicly stated his opposition to this measure, so it was the highlight of the three-day convention, which also included speeches by former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, former Marine Corps Staff Sargeant Eric Alva (the first American injured in the Iraq War), Republican San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, and Bonnie Dumanis, the first woman to serve as District Attorney for San Diego County. She is also a gay Republican. As usual, the convention was brimming with interesting seminars and workshops as well as a black tie dinner at the Naval Training Center Promenade.
One of the highlights of the convention was the screening of the award-winning film And the Bible Tells Me So, directed by Daniel Karslake, who conducted a workshop about the film along with two of the five sets of parents who appear in the film. It has drawn rave reviews since its premiere at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, and Log Cabin will assist in arranging viewings around the state and distributing copies to state legislators in Virginia.
If you have not yet attended a national convention, we urge you to seriously consider it next year, when it will be back in Washington, D.C. For more details about the convention and other events, visit the Log Cabin National web site at www.LogCabin.org. Calendar for May

Quotable Quotes |
Richmond Times-Dispatch Friday, February 17, 2006 Barry Goldwater, speaking in 1981: "I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that, if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in A, B, C, or D . . . .I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate." |
