Log Cabin Virginia Annual Summer Picnic – Food, Friends, and GOPolitickin’

In lieu of our regular monthly meeting in August, the Club will once again be having its annual summer picnic, this year on Sunday, August 14, from noon until 5 PM at Fort Ward Park (Area #4), 4301 West Braddock Road in Alexandria.  We have reserved a covered picnic area to protect us from sun or rain, so the picnic will be held regardless of the weather. Friends, partners, and guests are welcome, and guests may attend for free if they join LCR at the picnic.  A suggested donation of $15.00 gets you food, soft drinks, beer, and social camaraderie.  This is a great opportunity to interact with members outside the regular monthly meeting setting, as well as with candidates for public office and friends of the Club.

Separate invitations have gone out, but if you haven’t received one, a map and directions can be found on our new web site, www.VirginiaLogCabin.org.  In order to adequately plan for food and drinks, we ask that you RSVP to David Lampo at dclampo@yahoo.com, by phone at 703-655-7445, or by U.S. mail to LCR –VA,
P.O. Box 16611, Alexandria, VA  22302
.  You can also rsvp at the website.  Even if you haven’t responded by Sunday, however, you’re still welcome!

July Meeting – Candidates Present Themselves to the Club

We’d like to thank the candidates for office who took the time to introduce themselves to the Club at the July meeting.  Some of these candidates are well known to the Club because we have endorsed them in past campaigns. Four candidates for the Virginia House of Delegates attended, including Jim Hyland (35th District), John Mason (37th District), Greg Scoma (44th District), and Chris Gregerson (45th District), as did Bill Barker, candidate for the Arlington County School Board.  They all discussed topics that affect gay and straight voters, such as recent proposals to ban gay adoptions and gay/straight alliances in public high schools, the health insurance parity bill that passed the legislature this year, and the issue same-sex marriage vs. civil unions. After brief opening remarks, the candidates answered questions about how they would work for an inclusive and responsible Republican Party.

To find out more about the candidates, to raise concerns or issues withthem , to become involved in their campaigns, or to make a donation, check out their web sites:

Membership Renewals – Help us Continue to Make a Difference – Renew Your Membership Today!

As the 2005 governor’s race heats up and the entire Virginia House of Delegates faces election in November, Log Cabin Republicans will be championing issues of equality and fairness for all citizens of Virginia.  A marriage amendment to the state constitution is almost guaranteed to be on the ballot in November 2006, and it is vital that we continue to speak out for equal treatment from our elected officials.  In order to do so, we need your active involvement and financial support.

Membership in Log Cabin Republicans of Virginia gives you to information, networking possibilities, and the chance to be politically active.  The Club lobbies legislators, engages the gay and straight communities, provides position papers to legislators and the press, and brings the struggle for equal rights and protections to the wider community.  For us to continue to do these things, we need you to become a member, or renew your membership now, so that we can speak for you.  Dues remain the same as last year:

Singles:             $50.00/year

Couples:                       $80.00/year

At-large members:        $10.00/year

Students:                      Half-price of the applicable category above.

Please don’t put this off any longer.  Bring your check to the annual picnic, and we’ll do the rest.

New Website – Check Us Out! www.VirginiaLogCabin.org

Our new website is finally up and running.  We have included information on many of the activities that the Club is involved in and publications such as press releases, copies of Op/Ed pieces, and other information of interest.  Check us out, and tell us how we’re doing.  We want to hear from you.

Bill Cleveland Fundraiser – A Chance to Support a True Friend

Bill Cleveland, a longtime friend and supporter of Log Cabins, and a former city council member, is a candidate for sheriff in Alexandria, and Club members Carl Jackson and Si Snow will be hosting a Log Cabin fundraiser for Bill at their home on Thursday, September 22.   The address is
2006 Braddock Court, Alexandria, Virginia
and the event will be from 6:30 PM until 9:00 PM.   Invitations with directions will be available at the summer picnic and at the September monthly meeting.  For more information, check out our website, or call 703-370-4912.

Gay Pride Day Update – Thanks Again!

At the end of July, Log Cabin National’s staff delivered thousands of postcards to U.S. House of Representative members on Capitol Hill, asking them to support the Military Readiness Enhancement Act.  The law would overturn the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, allowing gay and lesbian members of the armed forces to serve their country openly and honestly.

According to Log Cabin National Field Director Jeff Cook, this postcard campaign was the most successful grassroots campaign in Log Cabin history and we’re proud that so many of our members are having their voices heard in Congress.  Log Cabin Virginia collected hundreds of postcards at our table at Pride Day on June 12, and we’d like to thank our members and supporters for adding their voices to our cause.  Thank you all!

The Only Question That Matters: Do People Choose Their Sexual Orientation?

Noted author Chandler Burr has written a new white paper for the Liberty Education Fourm.  Burr's white paper clearly demonstrates that we already know the answer to this question--people don't choose their sexual orientation.  This has important political implications and it's a powerfull tool for achieving equality.

Quotable Quotes
Richmond Times-Dispatch

Barry Goldwater, speaking in 1981: "I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that, if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in A, B, C, or D . . . .I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate."
