October Meeting on the 18th: Safety First!

Officer Grimes from the Arlington County Police Department has been invited to give us useful and practical tips about personal safety and techniques to follow to avoid becoming a victim of crime.  Learn how to fend off both liberals and the radical right!  We’ll also have updates on various campaigns and a discussion of the upcoming club elections in January.  Join us at 6:30 at the Boulevard Woodgrill, 2901 Wilson Blvd. in Arlington.

September Meeting: LCR makes its endorsements

President Rebecca Maestri began the meeting by discussing a brochure and program put forward by the Liberty Education Forum (LEF), the nonprofit, educational arm of Log Cabin National, entitled, “The Only Question That Matters: Do People Choose Their Sexual Orientation.”  The brochure, copies of which were available at the meeting, has some blunt information that we all might find useful.  For instance, 79% of people who think human beings are born with a particular sexual orientation support civil unions or civil marriage equality.  Opponents of discriminatory marriage amendments and proponents of equality will find the information presented in this brochure invaluable in the upcoming debates over a state constitutional amendment and other marriage-related issues.

David Lampo, the Club’s communications director, next outlined our Club’s endorsements in the upcoming elections for the House of Delegates.  Our Political Action Committee sent contributions totaling more than $5000 to 15 state and local candidates who support an inclusive Republican Party.  This is where your contributions to our PAC play a vital role.  IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO MAKE CONTRIBUTION IN OUR FIGHT FOR EQUALITY, so please contribute to our political action committee today.  Checks should be payable to LCR-Va. PAC and mailed to Log Cabin PAC, PO Box 16611, Alexandria, VA 22032.

Below is a copy of the news release the Club sent out listing our endorsed candidates.

LOG CABIN REPUBLICANS OF VIRGINIA ENDORSE 15 STATE AND LOCAL CANDIDATES

The Log Cabin Republican Club of Virginia, a mainstream organization of gay and lesbian Republicans, has voted to endorse 13 Republican candidates for the House of Delegates, as well as two local candidates in Arlington and Alexandria.  The House candidates include the following incumbents:

Del. Vince Callahan—34th District,                   Chairman, Appropriations Committee
Del. Dave Albo—42nd District
Del. Harry Parrish—50th District
Del. Terrie Suit—81st District
Del. Harry Purkey—82nd District
Del. Leo Wardrup—83rd District, Chairman, Transportation Committee
Del. Robert Tata—85th District
Del. Tom Rust—86th District
Del. Harvey Morgan—98th District, Chairman, Commerce and Labor Committee

And the following challengers to House Democrat incumbents:

Jim Hyland—35th District
John Mason—37th District (open seat)
Greg Scoma—44th District
Chris Gregerson—45th District

The Club also voted to endorse Bill Barker, running for the Arlington County School Board, and Bill Cleveland, running for Alexandria Sheriff.  Cleveland was a longtime Alexandria City Council member and former vice mayor.

These candidates were chosen for their record of supporting expanded rights for gay and lesbian Virginians as well as a more inclusive Republican Party.  Support will include contributions from the Log Cabin Political Action Committee.

Club president Rebecca Maestri said, “While these candidates are not with us on every issue, they have supported us on several important bills in the General Assembly and have demonstrated a concern for gay and lesbian equality and fairness all too lacking in other Republican candidates.  We applaud them for their willingness to listen to our concerns and work for a more tolerant society.”

The Log Cabin Republican PAC will make over $5,000 worth of contributions to these candidates during this election cycle.

Bill Cleveland Fundraiser a   Big Success

On Thursday, September 22, Club members Si Snow and Carl Jackson hosted a fundraiser at their home for Bill Cleveland, a former Alexandria City Council member and vice Mayor and now candidate for sheriff of Alexandria in November.  Bill has been a long time friend of Log Cabin and devoted public servant.  This event raised nearly $5,000 for Bill’s campaign.  Anyone wishing to donate more or to volunteer for his campaign, please visit Bill’s website at www.ClevelandforSheriff.com.  His phone is (703) 350-9675.

The Only Question That Matters: Do People Choose Their Sexual Orientation?

Noted author Chandler Burr has written a new white paper for the Liberty Education Fourm.  Burr's white paper clearly demonstrates that we already know the answer to this question--people don't choose their sexual orientation.  This has important political implications and it's a powerfull tool for achieving equality.

Barry Goldwater, speaking in 1981: "I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that, if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in A, B, C, or D . . . .I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate."
