McDonnell Responds to Controversy over His Voting Record and College Thesis
In response to the widely quoted, 20-year-old college thesis that the Washington Post recently unearthed, Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell has expressed his strongest support to date for the principle of nondiscrimination on the basis of sexual orientation by the government. The dissertation expressed some frightening views for those who believe in limited government, individual rights, and equality under the law. McDonnell says his views on these issues have changed and that he now believes that “government should not punish or discriminate based on anyone’s sexual orientation.” Much of his voting record in the House, however, is at odds with this admirable statement, so Mr. McDonnell appears to be a work in progress on glbt issues.
He recently issued a statement to Equality Virginia summarizing his views on anti-gay discrimination, and that letter is included with this newsletter.
We explicitly urge Mr. McDonnell to spell out exactly how he would implement the policy of employment nondiscrimination for state employees that he says he supports, and by doing so, he could help lay to rest the fears of many that his views today are not substantively different than those expressed in the dissertation. Log Cabin Republicans stand ready to work with him in implementing such a policy and working with him on other issues of interest to gay and lesbian Virginians. Annual Summer Picnic a Big Success
We want to thank everyone who attended our annual summer picnic in August, when we brought it back to Fort Ward Park in Alexandria. Despite the hot weather, nearly 60 people turned out for some great food and drink, including candidates for the House of Delegates that included Del. Dave Albo, Del. Tom Rust, Jim Hyland, Vicki Vasques, Eric Brescia, Aaron Ringel, and Rich Anderson. Their campaign websites are listed below along with other candidates from northern Virginia. We urge all of our members and supporters to get involved in these campaigns now because the election is just six weeks away!
Entire House of Delegates Up for Election In November
In addition to the three statewide offices, the entire 100-member House of Delegates is also up for election. Below are listed all the Republican incumbents and challengers in Fairfax County, Arlington County, and Alexandria City, and a few other northern jurisdictions. Two incumbents, Dave Albo from Springfield and Tom Rust from Herndon, are greatly deserving of reelection, and we urge you to ask the other candidates their position on expanding gay and lesbian equality, including support for outlawing employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation for state employees.
